Initial Setup

Step 1: Get Your API Key

WPSummarize uses AI providers to generate summaries. You’ll need an API key from one of these providers:

  • Free version: OpenAI only
  • Pro version: Choose between OpenAI, Google Gemini, or Anthropic Claude

For OpenAI (Free & Pro):

  1. Visit OpenAI’s API Keys page
  2. Sign up or log in to your OpenAI account
  3. Click Create new secret key
  4. Give your key a name (e.g., “WPSummarize”)
  5. Copy the API key immediately (you won’t be able to see it again)
  6. Store it somewhere safe temporarily
  7. Add billing information to your OpenAI account to use the API
⚠️ Important: OpenAI API keys start with “sk-“. Keep your API key secure and never share it publicly. You’ll need to add billing information to your OpenAI account to use the API.
💡 Cost Information: OpenAI charges per use (typically $0.01-0.05 per summary depending on post length). You only pay for what you use. With the free version, you’re limited to 50 summaries per month through WPSummarize. With Pro, you have unlimited summaries (just pay your OpenAI API costs).

For Google Gemini (Pro Only):

  1. Visit Google AI Studio
  2. Sign in with your Google account
  3. Click Create API Key
  4. Copy your API key

For Anthropic Claude (Pro Only):

  1. Visit Anthropic’s API page
